Dr. Mikao Usui
The History of Reiki
Reiki is a gentle yet powerful energy healing practice that has been helping people achieve relaxation and balance for over 100 years. The modern Reiki system was rediscovered in Japan in the early 1920s by Dr. Mikao Usui, who developed a method of channeling universal life force energy to promote healing of the mind, body, and spirit.
The word “Reiki” comes from two Japanese words: “Rei,” meaning universal or spiritual wisdom, and “Ki,” meaning life force energy—the vital energy believed to flow through all living things.
While the Reiki system practiced today was established by Dr. Usui, many believe that the concept of energy healing has existed in various forms throughout history, spanning cultures and ancient healing traditions around the world. For generations, people have recognized the importance of balancing the body’s energy to support health, emotional well-being, and spiritual growth.
Today, Reiki is practiced worldwide in private practices, wellness centers, hospices, and even some hospitals as a complementary therapy that promotes deep relaxation and supports the body’s natural healing processes. Millions of people have experienced its calming and restorative benefits, making Reiki one of the most widely recognized forms of energy healing available today.
At its heart, Reiki is a simple yet profound practice based on compassion, intention, and the belief that when our energy is balanced, we are better able to heal, grow, and live with greater peace and harmony.
